James's Story
Life
My Spouse
My wife Elaine teaches Chemistry, Advanced Chemistry, and Honors Chemistry at Shaler Area High School.
My Pets
We have a parakeet. Our beagle tessie passed away due to cancer in 2007.
My Kids
They were born 3 years minus 3 days apart and in their baby pictures they look like twins. Elaine Marie was born September 11, 1991. She is in the North Hills Marching Band.
Maria was born September 8, 1994. Both Elaine and Maria are in the Gifted and Talented Education ( GATE ) program in the North Hills School District. Elaine played softball for 3 years ( I coached her in the first year ) and had played soccer for 3 years. Maria also plays an instrument in the North Hills Elementary Band.
I have met a lot of people in North Hills because I am a "Band Parent", the parent of two atheletes, and a former softball coach for North Hills Athletic Association.
My Job
I teach information science part-time at Community College of Beaver County.
It is very interesting because the information science field changes so quickly. In recent years I have been teaching advanced network classes, advanced programming classes, Microsoft Office 2007, Office 2003, Office XP and Office 2000 classes, and introductory courses. I taught computer science at Pitt for 21 years part-time. For 5 years at Pitt I taught lectures of up to 150 students and supervised 10 computer lab Teaching Assistants.
I am considering starting on my phD within the next 5 years.
I care about all of my high school classmates. Aside from class reunions, I have only seen a few classmates around town....Expand for more
I wish everyone in the Avonworth Class of '73 the best of luck in whatever they do, and all the happiness that they can find in this world. I am truly blessed to have known them and to count many of them as friends. - Jim Robbins
School
I decline to identify the ladies that I had crushes on, out of respect for their privacy and their families. But I will say that there were three of them, and I was too shy to ask any of them out. So, I did not date anyone from the Avonworth Class of 1973.
In Junior High School, I was inspired by many teachers, including Mr. Coyle, Mr. Coble, and Mr. Kuchinski, but most of all by Mr. Owoc. In high school, I was inspired by several excellent teachers, including Mr. Taylor, Mr. Schrechengost, Mr. Kuchinski, Mrs. Hoss, and Mr. Deiss. Of all of them, Mr. Deiss and Mrs. Hoss influenced the direction of my life the most. I developed an interest in computers which is still my passion today. Although I never planned to teach professionlly, in Fall 2010 I will have completed 30 years teaching computer courses from Intro to Computers to advanced programming courses in Visual C++, Java, Visual BASIC, HTML, and advanced network courses. I teach college students how to configure computer networks and how to defend them against computer viruses and other types of attacks. Over the years I have taught about 5,500 students from over 60 countries, including China, Taiwan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam.
Workplace
I am currently teaching Computer Information Technology part-time at Community College of Beaver County.
